Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

When you are deciding on the perfect double buggy, there are many aspects to consider. We spoke to Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

What type of buggy would you like?

Double buggys are great for transporting up to two children at once even if they're not the same age. They can also function as prams. Each seat has a reclining mechanism so that your children can sit or lie down in different positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from snacks and drinks to wipes and nappies. They're typically lightweight, fold easily and are compact enough to fit in the car boot. If you travel a significant amount, you should check that the buggy can be easily maneuvered with the wheels folded in your boot and taken out.

The most common type of double buggy is the side-by-side one, which you've likely seen on other moms pushchairs, or perhaps ridden in as a kid. They're usually easy to drive and, if you opt for a model with soft suspension, make light work of kerbs.

Tandem buggies are another popular option since they're easier to turn than side-by-side. This is due to the fact that the second seat is positioned behind the first instead of sitting over it. The seats are typically bigger and bulkier than a side-by-side however, so make sure whether they can fit through doors or on public transport. They can be used for twins or a toddler and baby or three kids with the addition of a buggy.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They're more expensive than tandem buggies and side-by-side buggies, however they provide plenty of flexibility and a very high cost of resale. They are easy to steer and have large storage bins. They also have the ability to handle uneven surfaces. Some models come with a built-in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema seats'.

If your children are twins or siblings with different age groups, a double buggy is the most efficient way to transport them around. There are two types of double buggy: side-byside buggies that let your children are seated in a row, side-by-side and tandem buggies in which one child is higher than the other. Both can accommodate two fixed seats, but side-byside buggies are typically narrower in width for getting through doors. Tandems tend to be larger in general. They can also accommodate a carrycot and toddler seats.
