Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

The Hydra isn't as popular with UK backpackers possibly because they've been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the latest lightweight offering from China or Korea. It has a fairly typical stove design with a burner bell bolted to an aluminum body that is anchored by three fold out support legs. The pump is located above the fuel line, while the generator loop runs around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above. The burner is a low-velocity flame type. This means it is less affected by wind.

It is a nice feature that it can be utilized with a canister of isobutane or propane, which makes it a versatile little cooker. It's easy to simmer with propane or isobutane and burns all types of fuel at a reasonable level, however it is a bit slower than other stoves that use white gas.

One thing to keep in mind with the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions caution you against using certain types of lighter fluid. If they are mistaken this could cause an accident and land Kovea in legal trouble. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas canister of a trusted brand will work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

The Primus Omnilite Ti is a great option to those looking for a multifuel stove that is able to cook using a variety of fuels. It can run on gas, petrol/gasoline, Kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type and also allows to adjust the flame size which is a great feature. This stove also has an fuel line that is flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it requires maintenance to keep it running properly. In particular it is prone to flare during priming, which could be risky. This is a common issue with all liquid fuel stoves that utilize a secondary spindle throttle at the stove's side to evaporate fuel instead of an engine coil.

It is also important to note that every fuel type requires a different jet. This means that if you're cooking on kerosene the jet hole must be smaller than when using gas. It's a minor issue but it's important to mention.

MSR Whisper Lite

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to fix on the field. It can run on either canister liquid gas or fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner has been revamped to ensure better heat distribution. It's great for beginners or backpackers who are budget-conscious.

It takes some time to set up, prime, and boil water but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not disappoint you. The flame is powerful and can cook a Liter of water in two minutes. The only drawback is that it's not as efficient for simmering as other stoves.

MSR created the Dragonfly to be a better burner. It's a similar design to the whistler, but it's more compact and offers superior performance. It's not as affordable as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a great alternative that provides a similar setup at half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters too. The same fundamental design is used for Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves both, however the Universal version can also be used with canister fuel in addition.

Coleman Sportster II
