Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Find a stroller that can be folded in just one step and then easily tucked away into your car. You may also prefer an ultra-lightweight design, particularly in high traffic streets.

Side-by-Side

They are the most commonly used type of double pushchair and generally can seat two children together. They are generally wider than single pushchairs, which means they're less agile on footpaths and can be a little tricky to navigate through kerbs with a car seat attached. The extra size makes them easier to maneuver through doorways and also more evenly distributed so that it is easier for you to carry them on your back.

They can be used as a twin foldable pram (click here to investigate) from birth, and many models will take both a carrycot or two car seats. Some models can be converted into a single mode with a basket to the side (like the Cybex Venus).

The Bugaboo Donkey 5 is a perfect example of this. In Twin Mode, you can place the rear seat alongside a carrycot. This creates a totally enclosed space for twins and is perfect for infants. This pram is also equipped with a couple of really neat accessories, including the newborn cocoons which can be put on face either direction (for a twin-facing pram) or facing inwards (for a standard single). It's not as light as other options but it is very well thought out.

Cybex is known for its nifty pushchairs and the single-to double is no exception. Its clever frame expands widthways to accommodate an additional seat, and you can use it as a twin from birth by incorporating the addition of two newborn cocoons (PS59 each) which create enclosed lie-flat spaces for infants. The large shopping basket that is behind the seat lets it be used in mono mode with just one child. And it has a rear and front suspensions that can handle bumps and uneven surfaces a little more easily. The top choice among our reviewers.

Tandem

If you're planning to have twins, you want a tandem pushchair that permits the children to be seated side by side, so they can see each one another. They are great for trips to the zoo, as children can watch the animals together. They're also ideal for parents who have to keep an eye on their toddler and the other eye on their infant, as they can see both at the same time.

Some tandem pushchairs are extremely flexible, as they can be converted to single mode. This is especially useful if you plan to have more than two children (or when your oldest child does not require the buggy anymore). This means you won't be left with an empty pushchair to put away and can be expensive.

For instance, the Cybex Venus can be used in mono or double mode, and features a clever frame that opens wide to accommodate a second seat. It's not the lightest pushchair cheap but it has an ample basket that can be placed behind the front seat in double mode, or in the back when it's in mono mode. The seats can either be placed so that they face one the other or higher to observe what the other is doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs like the Joolz Geo 3 can seat one on top of the other or side-by-side. They are sleek and compact frame that makes them easier to navigate through doorways and supermarket aisles, and some models can be used as a jogging or stroller on rough terrain due to a four-wheel suspension as well as wide rear wheels.

A tandem pushchair can also be used to carry two carrycots or a car with a buggy seat. You can save money by creating a travel system at the beginning and not making separate purchases. Remember that tandems are heavier and longer and may feel less stable when bumping up kerbs and going over uneven surfaces. They also have to be dismantled to fit in cars.
