3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeler is ideal for rough terrain, offering a smooth ride for your child. They can also be easier to maneuver and push than a four-wheel buggy especially those with fabric slings or modular seat units that are positioned comfortably in the frame, offering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, making them an excellent option for off-roading (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They usually have large front wheels, which can cope well with kerbs and bumps as well as rough ground. Some even feature a lockable front tire for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels and this can mean that they can tip over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able to turn on a dime, be easy to steer with one hand, and have a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them perfect for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are made to be able to navigate tracks that aren't paved and should be able to take on rocks, mud, gravel, etc. Many all-terrain buggies have an swivelling front wheel that can be locked to add stability when dealing with extremely rough terrain too.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run and love to speed up the hill. This is particularly true if you are planning to attach to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, offering a world-facing seat that reclines flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight 3 wheel stroller, compact and suitable from birth and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It also handles a bit of moderate jogging, but it's not designed for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that can handle difficult terrain, you need one with big wheels. They can handle grass, cobbles and dirt tracks and provide a smooth ride for all passengers. They are also great for jogging since they're equipped with suspension and are easy to get up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they're quite heavy to push.

The best 3-wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). Seating

The seating capacity of 3 wheelers is quite impressive and there are a variety of different options to pick from. For newborns it is possible to use the included carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a comfortable and cozy lying flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy) In addition, older babies and toddlers can be seated in the parent or world-facing seat unit that is roomy and cushioned and has adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline completely, but can be lowered down to the lowest position. This should still allow your child plenty of headroom and space.

A sling made of fabric is also available. It has the advantage that it is located within the frame, rather than on top as a seat that is modular. This means that it has a lower centre of gravity, with a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this kind of seat handled the obstacles.

Alongside a huge shopping basket, this kind of buggy generally has pretty useful features such as an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy-to-use brake pedal, and some bright, game-changing lights that come up from the handlebar and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to improve their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

Storage

The 3 wheel stroller travel system-wheeled model is more stable and can be pushed with one hand. It's also more suitable for terrains that are difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the basket won't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres with a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It will also be equipped with the form of a car seat and carrycot which means you can use it from birth.

MFM's reviewers discovered that the 3-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded prior to purchasing.

It's worth looking into a 3-wheeler that can take two (or even 3!) seats when your family grows - these are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these; it can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts to twin buggies when your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tires cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are commonly included on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said offered "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also mentioned that the grippy tires of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easy for her to maneuver around the kerbs and other obstacles.

They can be difficult to maintain and will need to be filled regularly. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to ensure that you have repair kits, spare inner tube and pump in case you go you're out and about in your buggy.

PU tyres can be used on pushchairs because they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres but are equally durable. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and supple feel. They also glide well on even and tied surfaces.

If you rub your hands over the tyres you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels as if it's sliding, then it's a PU. You can also check that your buggy has PU tyres by slipping the tyres over a clean, flat surface They'll be able to roll easily and should fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are often used in high-performance buggies and joggers because they can cope with the rough terrain common to this type of pushchair. This could make your buggy less stable as the foam loses its springy quality. Also, these tyres may frequently be noisy, as they make a lot of noise when you turn and make your way around town.
