During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared performing at the same time. The band broke up following this. Toto came back together for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 years that all Toto's original members were on stage together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

However, the group resumed touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album marked a return to their best form, and the tour that came with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had returned to the band.
