Before Toto was formed The members of the band did sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session drummer Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in 1976.

While touring for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun, drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In the year 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included live recordings from the tour and also an interview with the group.
