    How to Replace an audi new key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

    Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

    The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

    If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

    It's a bit tricky to test since there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

    I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

    I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

    4. ECU

    The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

    Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or repair a misfire when you are in gear.
