The construction of the Akula II class Nerpa nuclear attack submarine started in 1991, but was suspended for over a decade due to a lack of funding. In late December 2009, the Russian Nerpa nuclear attack submarine, which had been damaged while undergoing sea trials in November 2009, entered service with the Russian Navy.
