Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're looking for a buggy run around in or a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight places.

If you're looking for a smooth ride with your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. They are susceptible, however, to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.

New data show that three-wheeled buggies, the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easy to drive and look fashionable.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found it coped well with cobbles, grass, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath wrote "it is sturdy to push and very solid when you're on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my children.

Another thing to take into consideration is the size of the seat and shape. It should be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort and you will also require it to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer a lie-flat option that lets your child face you, while others only allow a face-to-parent one.

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies designed for off-road use. Additionally, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies come with swivel wheels at the front to help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This also helps in the event that you hit an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up to keep you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres which allow them to tackle a broad range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you will need to have an repair kit and spare inner tube in your arsenal.

These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which, she says "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily climb or descend kerbs. The buggies also come with a suspension that according to Kath "smooths out bumps extremely effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels can be quite large, and may struggle to fit in tight spaces. This is a problem especially if you're using it to a jogger or to maneuver through doors that are narrow when out and out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with small folding options that let you take off the front wheels to create more compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the major advantages to a three-wheeled buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable especially with a child on the way. The only drawback to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel tandem stroller wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when you live in a city. If this is a concern, a 4-wheel buggy might be a better option for you.

Kath who was our MFM reviewer, also appreciated the space of this buggy. There's a easily accessible large basket that's quite spacious for a buggy of this size.
