What to Do With Your Rep welcome kit

Rep kits are a great method of repairing your gear until you can get to the trailhead to have it repaired professionally. The key is knowing what you can do with it when you need it.

Tools

The right tools are available is critical when out in the field. This kit was created with that in mind and includes all the essential hand tools required to repair items in the field. The tools are made of metal and have minimal plastic so they can be used for a long time. The kit includes a zippered canvas pouch for the coalcracker tools, as well as a twist awl, reamer and cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also comes with a bottle of coalcracker oil, illustrated directions as well as a wooden spool, a reamer, and the twisted Awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gear, think about adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These heavy-duty patches come with high-performance adhesives that are applied to a rugged polyurethane backing that lets a tear heal under pressure. Available in clear and colored options These patches offer durability against punctures, moisture sunlight, saltwater and temperature extremes.

If your kit doesn't contain any of the above items, think about adding a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight glue can be applied to plastics, fabrics metals and more to provide permanent repair. This glue is ideal for fixing drysuits and can also be used in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for up to 12 hours prior to using your repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated polyester. Includes one Clean Tape repair patch and sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Gore-Tex Sealant & Repair Adhesive & Brush and sealant tube. To use, place patch on a smooth, clean surface of damaged area with a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove the release paper from the patch surface and rub adhesive using moderate finger pressure (adhesive side up).

Surface preparation is vital for successful repairs; oils on shoes or boots sunblock, solvents such as Acetone could affect adhesion. Use Seam Grip with Cotol 240 Cure Accelerator for best results.

Adhesive patches

These patches are great for those who don't wish to wait until they get back on the trail. Apply the self-adhesive patch and roll it over.

Clean the punctured area thoroughly, then use the tube-scuffer or sandpaper to roughen the surface, which helps glue stick. Apply a thin layer of glue over the patch. Cover the area with a layer that is at least as big as the patch. Give it a few minutes to allow the glue to become tacky before pressing the patch into place and firmly securing it in place.

This kit comes with two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric repair patches and a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive and sealant. Perfect for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, tents as well as rainwear, packs and boots.
