The best way to upgrade your equipment in Path of Exile is through upgrading your items. This lets you enhance your gear without having to depend on costly trades or drops. This article will teach you how to upgrade your gear effectively.

Upgrades in equipment can add a bonus to the item's base stats. The bonus is based on the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components are the things that improve your armor and weapons more effective. You can get them from the destruction of enemies, finding them in item spheres or buying them from karma merchants. You can also get them from equipment containing the components, or by utilizing salvage kits of high-end quality, such as Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Unlike most other items upgrade components, upgrade components aren't destroyed when removed from an item.

The main function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded but they also serve other functions. They can be stacked in order to boost the level or experience gained by upgrading existing equipment or weapons. They can also be forged to give additional bonuses. The number of items that are upgradeable is determined by their upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade they are able to receive. For instance, the highest possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon of tier 10. However, the most common upgrade for weapons is a tier 6 weapon and an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a group of items that share a bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least one time, and each upgrade boosts its guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade the set piece or weapon, it will receive an increase of +1 to its primary stat. After subsequent upgrades, the primary stats are enhanced even more (for instance the +1 bonus for 12+/13+/14+) and every time an item is upgraded, one of its stats will increase randomly.

Upgrades can also boost a weapon's damage base. This can be crucial for certain builds. However, weapons are not upgraded to a higher maximum defense roll than their base.
